Commissioners Have Tough Call To Make On Sports Complex Job

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Highlands County commissioners can expect some unpleasant budget sessions this summer as they will be forced to make difficult decisions for the 2008-09 fiscal year. They of course have been aware of this for a while, but that doesn't make it any easier.

One position that is being proposed to be cut from the parks and recreation department budget is the manager of the Highlands County Sports Complex.

The complex was built to be able to handle the recreation needs for residents. However, it was also constructed to help boost the local economy by drawing out-of-town teams and their dollars into restaurants, motels and other businesses.

It is a top-notch facility, but is also is an expensive project. The cost - $4.2 million.

We understand that Rocky Ellingsworth has done a terrific job in booking weekend tournaments in the first year of operation for the complex.

This weekend is a good example. A College Fast-Pitch Showcase Tourney started Saturday and continues today at the complex, which is near Sebring High School. Girls from around the area are displaying their talents for college coaches who have been invited to attend.

The tournament probably could have been held anywhere. If it had, softball players in the Heartland might not have had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Getting exposure is important for athletes seeking scholarships.

If the manager's position is cut - and we hope that doesn't happen - who will pick up the slack and market the complex and book tournaments? If the responsibility falls to someone else, is that person qualified? Will he or she be compensated for the extra work?

It might be naive to think that tournament officials will automatically return to Sebring each year. There are lots of other places that host softball and baseball tournaments that probably wouldn't mind having a few more.

Ellingsworth apparently has good contacts with softball tournament officials around the state as well as throughout much of the South. If he leaves, and takes a similar job in Florida, will those folks he has worked to establish a relationship with decide to move their tournaments to where he goes? It is something the commissioners should consider.

The commissioners need to think long and hard about cutting this particular position. Some people might not think so, but it's an important job.
