Sheriff's Office Investigating Missing Trailers

It probably wasn't mice, but it could have been a rat who stole a semi-tractor trailer with 18 pallets of Wisconsin cheese, parked on U.S. 27 in front of Florida Hospital in Lake Placid.

Highlands County Sheriff's Det. Sgt. David Stewart said Friday there were two cases of tractor trailer thefts in each end of the county. Stewart is the sheriff's property crimes investigator on the case.

The first was a 2003 Freightliner tractor, red in color with yellow and blue pin stripes, Stewart said. It was carrying the load of cheese.

"The guy parked the tractor trailer in Lake Placid across from the hospital," he said. "He left the keys in it, but claims he locked it. There were no signs of broken glass on the ground. The tracks indicated it pulled out and headed south on U.S. 27."

The trailer is a 2006 Great Dane, white in color and belongs to S&S Trucking LLC.

In the case on the north side of the county, a refrigeration trailer was stolen some time between July 18 and July 21 in Avon Park. It is a 2007 Great Dane trailer.

It was parked on a lot at 3015 U.S. 27 N., belonging to Graham Farms. The trailer is owned by Bay Shippers, Stewart said. It was silver with 3-foot blue and gold lettering that said, "Bay Shippers."

Anyone with information on these thefts is asked to contact Det. Sgt. David Stewart at the sheriff's office at 863-402-7200.
