In fiscal year 2008-09, Highlands County will spend nearly $170 million, according to a budget summary presented Tuesday at the county commissioner's meeting.
About 38 percent will come from taxes, 12 percent from intergovernmental revenues, 6 percent from services, and less than 1 percent from licenses and fines, said Office of Management and Budget Director Bernis Gainer.
About 36 percent of the $75.4 million general fund will be given to the sheriff's office; $39 million to departments operated by the county commissioners, and about $10 million to the clerks of court, property appraiser, tax collector and supervisor of elections.
The county collects 12 cents a gallon in taxes on motor fuels, but Gainer noted it will take in about $1 million less, and projected the county will spend 50 cents a gallon more buying its own fuel.
Gainer also projected the county will take in $1.3 million less in sales taxes than the all-time high of $9.1 million in 2007.
At the same time, tipping fees are also declining from two years ago, probably because people are recycling more, Gainer suggested.
