RCMA Kids, Parents To Learn About Vision Safety

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A $9,978 grant is helping the Heartland Rural Health Network Inc. develop a comprehensive, and the first of its kind, video education program for children 5 and under.

The group wants to implement the vision safety curriculum at the Redlands Christian Migrant Association's 15 schools located in Highlands, Hardee, and DeSoto counties.

The National Eye Institute (NEI) funded the grant to support eye health education and promotion projects by community-based groups.

The vision safety curriculum includes games, story-telling and puppetry, which enhance educational messages on children's vision safety.

"Kids are able to learn how to be safe with their eyes through a fun and exciting educational process. We will also be reaching out to their parents to share safety tips on eye injury prevention," said Kelly J. Johnson, the Network's health planning director.

The grant is expected to provide 500 children and 100 parents in the tri-county area with vision safety education.
