A normally quiet summer Sunday morning in downtown Sebring will be transformed into a busy race site for hundreds of athletes
The 2008 Heartland Triathlon is on tap today with competitors pumped for running 3.1 miles, a 14-mile bike ride and a quarter-mile swim in Lake Jackson.
It is a good event for the community and we're pleased that it is taking place for the third year.
There might have been some doubt about the triathlon's future in light of the situation involving Dan Andrews, the former president and CEO of the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce. The chamber was instrumental in establishing the event, which has attracted more participants each year.
The best place for spectators is City Pier Beach.
For those who are not planning to watch, be careful driving around town this morning.
The outside lane of U.S. 27 on the eastern side of Lake Jackson will be closed during today's competition. Motorists will be able to use the two inside lanes for the duration of the event.
There are signs along U.S. 27 near Burger King to warn motorists about cyclists.
After the triathlon, why not head to the park, specifically Highlands Hammock State Park. Highlands Hammock is offering a break as part of a state wide campaign promoting Florida's parks. Park admission will be free today beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until sundown when it closes
There are nature trails providing visitors with a chance to see wildlife up close
Bring a picnic and let the kids hit the playground
Take a stroll on the catwalk and check out the alligators
For the bike rider, bring the two-wheeler and explore the off-road bicycle trails. Bikes can be rented at the park
Take advantage of the opportunity to visit one of the area's natural treasures.
