Can anyone remember a more exciting political race to watch than this year's presidential election? Probably not, if what a person considers exciting is a race so wide open. Often a front-runner emerges early and stays there. Of course, it's still early in the primary season. Soon, though, we'll have both fields narrowed down a great deal.
On Tuesday, former Sen. Fred Thompson dropped out of the race. But three Republicans and three Democrats are still running strong. Soon the Democrats probably will be down to two, but in this season, just about anything can happen.
It's good that candidates are working so hard to win their parties' nominations. It makes them better leaders, and provides voters insight to candidates who have to fight and struggle to get elected.
What's painful, though, is to think of all the money that is spent in these campaigns. Consider the millions that are being spent right now to get us to cast a vote. It's difficult to comprehend, but it's also true that the only way you can become the president is to spend the big bucks.
We hope that in all this political madness that the important part of the race is not lost. We don't want more lip service and empty promises. We want substance, we want honesty and we want leadership.
Let's hope that all of those things emerge in the near future.
