We don't blame Sebring City Council members for being upset that they are having no say in plans for jail expansion. Considering that the county jail is located in Sebring, and any growth directly impacts the city and its residents, it's a legitimate issue. That said, there isn't a good answer on how best to proceed.
It makes sense for inmates facing court hearings to be located close to the courthouse. The money required to transport them, and more importantly, the safety of moving inmates, makes this a complex issue.
The Highlands County Commission will make final decisions on jail expansion, and it won't be easy. Sebring City Council members point out that the jail is located on property between the high school and the middle school. Further expanding the facility makes it uncomfortable for everyone.
Let's just hope the county allows the city to play an active role in jail expansion. The eventual solution might not make everyone happy, but at least the people most affected will have a say in the outcome.
