SEBRING - Two Hardee County men were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital after an early morning crash Wednesday, when a Ford SUV flipped about 1,000 feet north of Valerie Boulevard on U.S. 27.

According to a crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol, it was about 12:33 a.m. Wednesday when the vehicle headed southbound on U.S. 27. For some unknown reason, the Ford left the roadway onto the west shoulder.

It traveled on the west shoulder of U.S. 27 for about 220 feet before reentering the roadway, where it rotated southwest across three lanes of southbound U.S. 27, according to the report.

When the vehicle hit the median it overturned multiple times and across all three northbound lanes and into an embankment at the Kegel Bowling Center.

Both the driver and the passenger were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the flipping SUV onto the pavement of the Kegel Bowling Center, the report stated.

The vehicle ended up in the Kegel parking lot as well, the report stated.

The driver, Spencer T. White, 21, of Wauchula, was transported by LifeNet helicopter, treated and released. Passenger, Christopher M. Owens, 28, was flown to Tampa General and remains in critical condition, a spokeswoman said.
