Ask just about anyone with an interest in shopping in Highlands County what store they would most want to see open here. The answer, most likely, would be Target. That dream might become a reality, according to a few real estate professionals who have talked to the company. But no deal has been made and it could take years before anything is actually built - if it happens at all.
Our county hit the magic demographic numbers that major retailers look for before opening a new store. Along with the projected growth of the area in the coming decade, more companies are looking to invest. Circuit City, Michael's and others that people have been wanting finally appeared. We've even drawn two Starbucks to the area.
Target has long been the most asked for discount store for this area. Wal-Mart does a smashing business here, so there's little doubt that there's a customer base. Convincing large retailers to spend the money, though, is not easy. They want to know they can make a profit and be successful.
We hope Target finds the perfect place and gets moving gaining all the approvals necessary for a new store. It will take a long time for that to happen, so the sooner they start, the better. And with Target will, no doubt, be others to come. These are exciting times for folks living here. Let's hope this good news comes to pass.
