LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $30,500 bail Thursday, charged with trying to rob a Lake Placid woman at her home on E.A. Smith Avenue.
Joseph Carl Rogers, 31, of 310 Phoenix St., was charged with robbery (attempted) with a firearm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the 49-year-old victim, she answered her door Monday in the 100 block of E.A. Smith Avenue, when she recognized Rogers standing outside.
He appeared to be drunk, she reportedly told Highlands County sheriff's investigators.
She said she knew Rogers and his girlfriend, who had been to her house on several occasions. She mentioned that she had loaned Rogers money in the past.
That day, he was asking to borrow $20, she told the deputies.
When she told Rogers she didn't have any money, he pulled a gun from his pants and pointed it at her, the report stated.
She began screaming for her daughter, the report stated, and Rogers left the house.
A friend told deputies that Rogers may have sold the gun, which appeared to be a 9 mm pistol, to an unknown person in Highway Park.
Rogers was located at 310 E. Phoenix St., where he was arrested. A search of the house yielded a glass smoking pipe under the bed in the only bedroom in the residence. No firearm was found, the report stated.
