Oprah's Endorsement

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Mr. Gulledge had his facts wrong as several letter writers pointed out. Not to gang up on him, but he also offered an opinion that he may wish to reconsider. He opined that Oprah Winfrey endorsed Sen. Obama because both are black. With that line of thinking, her endorsement of Sen. Clinton, likely her second choice, would have been because both are women.

America longs for a president whose likeness will someday adorn our currency: a Lincoln, an FDR, a JFK. One who inspires, energizes and impresses; a president who serves the country first and his or her party second and who stops America's tragic tailspin. Of the current candidates, only Sen. Obama shows that potential for greatness. He's got "it." I think that is what Oprah sees and is the reason she went to bat for him.

At this point, like many, I'm unwilling to take the risk associated with the Sen. Obama's comparatively light experience and don't plan to vote for him in the primary. Nevertheless, he is an intriguing candidate. In addition to being a gifted orator, he is smarter, better educated and, more polished, charismatic and articulate than the current president. One's qualities, i.e. "the right stuff" correlate to job performance; skin color and gender do not.
