LAKE PLACID - Wearing seat belts prevented Lake Placid Police Chief Phil Williams and his wife Margie from being seriously injured on Sunday afternoon on County Road 621 near Holmes Road.
"My wife called out, 'Lookout, he's stopping,'" Williams said Monday morning.
They hit the back of a Cadillac Escalade. The driver and passenger seemed to be OK, Williams said.
"I ran into the back of another person," Williams said. "I screwed up. I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing."
Williams said he was issued a ticket by the Florida Highway Patrol, charging him with careless driving.
"We'll pay it and move on from there," he said.
His wife was taken by Highlands County Emergency Medical Services personnel to Florida Hospital Lake Placid.
Williams said his wife was kept at the hospital over night for observation.
"She's doing pretty good," he said, adding that he was just leaving to go pick her up from the hospital.
Williams said they both had on their seat belts. His airbag deployed but for some reason his wife's did not.
"I don't know why," he said. "But nobody hit the dash."
Williams said after the crash, his wife grabbed for the family dog, Dixie, a Boston terrier, that also was not hurt.
