Avon Park Parade Ushers In Holiday Season

The price of gasoline and the slumping economy didn't stop Santa from visiting Avon Park Monday.

Unseasonably chilly weather might have even made him feel more at home. And there was no need for Rudolph and the gang since the North Pole's most famous resident rode atop a fire truck during the annual Avon Park Christmas Parade.

Santa was the last of 95 parade entries and thrilled kids of all ages.

Main Street was packed with holiday celebrants who waved often and regularly shouted, "Merry Christmas" to both old and new friends, as marchers progressed east.

The parade was sponsored by the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce. David Greenslade, executive director, was pleased to help throw the huge street party.

"It was a great turnout, a great parade and everything went off without a hitch," said Greenslade.

Mayor Sharon Schuler and Councilwoman Brenda Gray carried the chamber's banner at the front of the parade.

It was a truly a local affair. Several dance teams, fire companies, many businesses, church groups, beauty queens, youth groups, bands and politicians all marched ahead of Kris Kringle.

Christmas carols, bubbles, fake snow and much hand clapping filled the festive air.

Sandy and Bob Dietz visited from Tanglewood, in Sebring.

Sandy Dietz was on hand to see how the costumes she hand sewed looked on a pair of Toby's Clowns. Dietz also prepared the outfits the couple regularly wears when they portray Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

"The parade gets all the kids and families together," said Sandy Dietz.

Bob Dietz appreciated the home-grown enthusiasm shown by so many neighbors.

Sandy Dietz didn't tire of waving back to marchers.

"I want to be in it next year," said Sandy Dietz, with a smile. "But I don't think I could walk this far. We'd probably have to use our golf cart."
