Temperatures To Drop To 38 F

The overnight low will drop to 38 degrees on Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

But that's not low enough to open the emergency shelters, said Bill Nichols, director Highlands County's Emergency Management office. When temperatures plummet, there's hypothermia danger for people who sleep outdoors.

"The wind chill won't be in the 20s," Nichols said. "I'm not completely happy with that decision, but there are places in town for homeless people to go."

He's opened shelters in the past, but no one showed up. So instead, he'll check with law enforcement officers, who will direct homeless people to the New Testament Mission on Lemon Street in Sebring.
