VFD Gathering, Redistributing Medical Equipment

Without a wheelchair, Margaret Roy's range is limited.

"I can't walk very far," said Roy, who uses a cane to get around. She has two bad knees from a car wreck.

On Saturday, she received an electric wheelchair from the DeSoto City Volunteer Fire Department.

"We're donating them to people that need them," said Betty Romine, whose husband, Gerald, is a lieutenant there. Today, they have two electric chairs which were donated. The first belonged to Gerald's foster father, Anthony Albertus, who served in the VFD's auxiliary. The second chair will go to Debbie Scharf.

"We'd like to collect used medical equipment," said Romine, "and then we can pass it own to someone else."

The fire department is a legal charity, so donations to it are tax deductible, Romine said.

More info: Lt. Gerald Romine, 381-9648.
