Police were investigating Monday the carjacking of a 1996 Dodge pickup truck belonging to a Miami man, who picked up a hitchhiker at about 11 p.m. Sunday at the RaceTrac gas station, located south of the city.
"Be careful who you pick up," said Det. Sgt. Jason Lister, with the Avon Park Police on Monday afternoon. "The guy asked him, 'can you give me a ride,' so he gave him a ride."
That's when the victim was taken for a ride.
The alleged carjacker got as far as South Florida Avenue and Bell Street, where he ordered the victim to get out of the truck, took possession of the vehicle and headed north.
Trigg Hess Deweese, 28, of Sebring, reportedly was captured in Madison County by the Madison County Sheriff's Office operating the stolen truck.
He was arrested in Madison County and charged there with grand theft auto.
"He's a person of interest, being he was in the stolen truck," Lister said.
Charges in Highlands County are still pending.
Deweese reportedly was on probation for a 2003 home invasion.
