Cars Burglarized In Sun 'N Lake

SEBRING - Sheriff's deputies and the Sun 'n Lake administration are warning people to lock their cars after a series of "car fishing" incidents over the weekend.

"Car fishing" is when potential thieves try the door handles and look inside cars for opportunities to burglarize unlocked cars and remove people's valuables.

"It's surprising how many people don't (lock their cars)," said sheriff's Sgt. Sean Casey on Monday.

A deputy was cruising Sun 'n Lake of Sebring, near Ponce De Leon Boulevard and Romero Street when she saw someone duck down behind a parked car. The subject ran off when she tried to make contact with him.

A search with sheriff's K-9 units was not successful and there were no suspects at this point, Casey said.

The Improvement District issued an e-mail alert for residents to lock their cars.

"We want to deter any random acts of vandalism or theft and the easiest way is to lock up vehicles and houses at night," the public safety notice stated.
