Make Sure Your Voice Is Heard On County's Recreation Future

»  Comments | Post a Comment

We hope Highlands County residents step up and take part in a survey coming next year about what they want for recreational activities in the county. This is important information, and whatever's gleaned will be used for future projects.

Merritt O'Brien, chairman of the county's Recreation and Parks Advisory Board, said the 13-member board will use public response to consider recreational opportunities for area residents. Past surveys showed a need for more and better soccer facilities, as well as softball fields. We have both in the recently opened complex near Sebring High School.

Perhaps hiking or biking trails are wanted. Or maybe more nice public parks and recreational areas are needed on local lakes. We all know the recent debate centering around ATV riders and their lack of a place to call their own. Whatever the needs, the board will consider it.

We're glad they are seeking voices from all age groups. A lot of young people in Highlands County feel shut out of consideration because meetings are held during times when they are working or they are outnumbered by retirees who have plenty of time to lobby for their needs.

Forget the naysayers who say everything is too expensive and we shouldn't spend taxpayer money on this or that. Quality of life is a critical need for our county and improvements will do a lot to attract more jobs and people to this area. We need to hear from people who want these recreational opportunities. If you don't speak up, you might get left out. That's not what anyone wants and not in the best interest of our county.
