SEBRING - A Sebring man was transported to Florida Hospital Heartland Thursday morning after he was bumped while riding his moped on U.S. 27 southbound near Pizzano's Pizza and Grinderz.
Warlito Reyes, 64, was riding his 2007 Yamaha moped on the edge of the right lane at about 9:52 a.m. Thursday, when the mirror of a passing 2002 Ford Taurus bumped the handlebar of his moped.
As Reyes lost control of the moped, he fell off and the moped skidded into the far right lane, where it was run over by a UPS truck also headed south.
The Ford Taurus was being driven by Margaret Wychoff, 86, of Sebring, police officer Brandon Low reported.
Low added that the UPS driver did not have time to change lanes or to stop.
It was a good thing Reyes was wearing a helmet, said Low, as the helmet was badly scraped from hitting the pavement as he slid.
Reyes was treated at Florida Hospital for lacerations and a possible shoulder injury due to the crash, said Low. Wychoff was not hurt. She at first wasn't even sure she hit the moped.
She will be cited on a charge of improper passing, Low said.
