Project Harvest organizer Lynn McCray said she needs a lot more money than she managed to collect so far to pay for 400 Thanksgiving box dinners.
McCray, who had been hospitalized from a heart condition for much of the month immediately after an earlier Highlands Today story on Project Harvest was published, said her hospitalization slowed her fundraising efforts down. She said she currently has enough for only 100 of those 400 boxes she hoped to give out, or roughly $2,500 of the $10,000 needed at $25 per box.
"I don't want to turn anyone away," McCray said.
Project Harvest, done through the Albertsons supermarket at Sebring, serves needy families in Highlands, Hardee and southern Polk counties with free boxes of food. The boxes are stuffed with a turkey and enough side dishes to serve a family a full Thanksgiving dinner.
