LAKE PLACID - A Florida woman died Friday night in a one-vehicle accident on S.R. 70, three miles from C.R. 731.
Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Hull's report said Lashon Denson, 37, was westbound when an animal crossed the road. The vehicle swerved to avoid it, overcorrected, and struck a guardrail on the south side of the roadway.
"This caused Vehicle 1 to ignite and a fire started in the engine compartment," Hull wrote. "The driver and two of the passengers were able to exit the vehicle before the flames reached the passenger compartment."
However, the legs of She-Kala Walker, 20, were pinned in the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by firemen.
The driver had minor injuries. Two other passengers in the vehicle, Brittany Ellison, 16, and Courtney Denson, 4, were uninjured. All the occupants are from the Boynton Beach or Delray Beach area, the Highway Patrol said.
S.R. 70 was shut down for an hour until the wreckage could be cleared.
