TAMPA - Sebring motorcyclist James Wethington was listed in fair condition as of 2:45 p.m. Monday after recovering from a Sunday morning motorcycle accident in Sebring, according to an official at Tampa General Hospital.
Wethington, of Sebring, was riding north along U.S. 27 around 7:30 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of his motorcycle, skidded more than 150 yards down then pavement and crashed into the back of a Saturn driven by Christine Messick, 53, said Sebring Police Sgt. Mark Warner. Messick was visibly shaken but uninjured in the accident.
Tire screeches and scrapings from the motorcycle's body were visible for about 150 yards along the center and outer lanes, where Wethington's motorcycle skidded.
According to Warner, Messick, of Dade City, told him that she was waiting for a red light at Sparta Road.
"Next thing, she feels a push forward," Warner said. He said Messick looked behind her to see Wethington and his motorcycle on the ground.
Charges were pending as it was still under investigation Sunday morning.
The accident closed three northbound lanes of U.S. 27 for nearly three hours, causing traffic to back up for about a quarter mile. Traffic was also jammed along Lakeview Drive leading into U.S. 27. as the traffic snaked through the left turning lane through the Sparta Road intersection.
