City Manager To Apply To Lead AP Executive Airport

C.B. Shirey Will Leave City Manager Seat If Hired

AVON PARK - City Manager C.B. Shirey offered to apply to become the Avon Park Executive Airport's manager Monday, a move that would force him to resign as the city manager if he is hired.

Saying there was a shortage of qualified applicants for the airport manager's position, Shirey said he thought it would be easier for the city to hire him for the vacant spot and then seek a new city manager instead.

"I believe I am the most qualified person," Shirey said after receiving 16 applications. He complained that only three of the applicants had any airport experience.

The council voted unanimously to allow for Shirey to apply for the position and to accept his resignation as city manager when and if he is hired to manage the airport. Councilman George Hall said Shirey already had extensive knowledge about the airport's operation, and would be a good candidate for the airport's first manager.

"I think this is the biggest boost we can give to the airport," he added.

Shirey did not state Monday when he would turn in the application, but he could be hired as early as Jan. 2, when the council holds its next meeting.

Shirey offered to apply just as his annual evaluation was coming out. His evaluation, performed by the council, will be available later this morning.
