Highlands County Commission: District 2 Elwell is the best choice to fill Maxcys seat

Highlands County voters have clear differences in the race for Highlands County Commission District 2. Two good men are running for the same seat and both hold various views on what's most important They also agree on some basic things like representing people who need a voice in county government. After considering both, we encourage a vote for Don Elwell for the seat being vacated by Guy Maxcy.

Elwell is a conservative Republican, but says common sense will guide his decision making, not party doctrine. We believe that's the way any candidate should lead and will expect that kind of leadership if elected.

Many residents recognize Elwell from his frequent stints as emcee of events around the county. He's known for his humor, but no one should doubt his knowledge of the issues. He's worked hard to understand the many intricacies of county government. We were impressed with his knowledge on issues such as the county's asphalt plant and his philosophy on budgeting.

Some residents fear that Elwell will be the final piece to the majority that includes Jeff Carlson and Barbara Stewart who will shell services such as the county library and others that benefit average and lower income people. Elwell said while he probably leans more their way than other commissioners on some issues, he promised that he will always put the needs of average residents first.

Downing, a longtime educator who retired last year, is a respected and good man that we admire. He's promised to keep working hard for our county's most disadvantaged people, win or lose. We know he'll do just that. At this time, though, we believe Elwell is the best choice for our county commission.

Elwell's years in management, along with his grasp of the immediate issues at hand, put him over the top for us. We endorse him for the District 2 county commission seat.
