Tournament time for local teams

The Avon Park, Lake Placid and Sebring girls basketball teams will each be shooting for a spot in their respective district tournament championships tonight, as all three teams open district tournament play. Avon Park and Lake Placid will make the trip to DeSoto to compete in the Class 4A-District 10 tournament, while the Blue Streaks head to Winter Haven for the Class 6A-District 9 tournament.Published: January 29, 2013
The Blue Streaks finished No. 3 in the district standings, which will pit them against No. 2 Kathleen. The two teams split during the regular season, with each winning on the other team's home court.
The winner of the game will advance to Friday's championship game and is guaranteed a berth in the regional tournament.
Lake Placid claimed the regular season district title with a 6-0 record and will play the early game tonight against the winner of Monday's contest between Frostproof and Mulberry.
Avon Park will face DeSoto in the late game and the Red Devils will be trying to make amends for a pair of regular season losses to the Bulldogs, although both games were fairly close. The Bulldogs erased a 19-15 halftime deficit in the opening game between the two teams with a 23-9 third-quarter scoring advantage and went on to post a 53-42 victory on their home court.
In the rematch in Avon Park, the Red Devils fell behind 31-17, but made a strong comeback attempt, only to end up on the short side of a 40-35 decision.
The winner's of tonight's two contests will meet on Friday for the district championship. The district champions will have a home game in the regional tournament on Thursday, Feb. 7, while the district runner-up will travel on the road.
