SEBRING - When the Tanglewood Golf Association's annual holiday charity golf tournament held its final tally, the Dec. 13 event raised $4,500. Each year the tournament is held for a local charity and this year's beneficiary was the Champion for Children Foundation.

Champion for Children CEO Kevin J. Roberts was invited to Tanglewood on Wednesday to pick up the check and took the opportunity to thank the Tanglewood Golf Association, as well as Frank and Penny Irilli, who were the driving forces behind the event.

"I want to thank everybody for all of their hard work and efforts," Roberts said. "I don't take this lightly. This means so much to me personally."

Roberts has been involved in social work for nearly 40 years and said the foundation is doing great things, but it wouldn't be possible without the help of those like the Tanglewood Golf Association.

"I'm proud of the work we do in this community," he said.

The tournament was held on Sun 'n Lake's Turtle Run course and came down to the wire, as the team of Sue Shaw, Gale Tieder, Paul Henry and Linda Yeric captured first place with a team score of 116, winning on a match of cards. The foursome of Gail Brown, Bill Patterson, Jerry Rondy and Pam Neal also shot a 116 and finished second.

"You put together a great tournament," Roberts said. "I'm truly humbled we were chosen to be the beneficiary."

Tanglewood Golf Association President Mark Telfer said it was the association's members and the tournament sponsors who made the event a success.

The Tanglewood Golf Association isn't sitting still, as they are sponsoring the eighth annual Golf for a Cure at Pinecrest Golf Club on Feb. 9. The tournament has raised $40,000 since its inception. The four-person scramble is accepting registrations; the cost will be $50 per person.

Alan Jay Automotive and Alan J. Holmes of Edward Jones are sponsoring the event, with organizers seeking a co-sponsor, as well as hole sponsors. Call 382-8349 for more information.
