Teeing it up for charity

Low scores were the order of the day, as two charity golf tournaments were held Saturday, with the Avon Park Rotary David "Doc" Owen Memorial Golf Tournament taking place at River Greens and the Sebring Eagles No. 4240 tournament held at the County Club of Sebring.

The Eagles tournament attracted 88 players and the winning team in Flight 1 consisted of the foursome of Lane Capp, Charlie Cervantes, Matt Garcia and Nate Cervantes, as the foursome combined to shoot a 56.

The team of Chip Curcio, John Mac, Mike Winchester and Jim Gulick was second with a score of 57 and the foursome of Larry Staggs, Bill Heinlien, George Conners and Ron Soloman placed third with a score of 60.

In Flight 2 there was a three-way tie at 66, with the team of Ray Frye, Lori Frye, Mel Porter and Jerry Porter grabbing one of the 66 scores.

Gene Owen, Chuck R., Ron M. and Dwight A. also carded a score of 66, as did the foursome of Dan Butler, Bruce Davison, Richie Rich and Greg Breslich.

In Flight 3, the winning team consisted of Tom Downing, Jim Cannon, Roni Newsome and Lou Cannon with a score of 71.

Taking second, with a score of 72, was the team of Jerry Snyder, Diane Snyder, Doug Stern and Joy Stern.

In third place with a score of 73 was the team of Howard Mason, Darlene McCullough, Don Adkins and Elaine Adkins.

At River Greens there were 76 players, the winning team in Flight 1 was the foursome of Doug Gentry, Greg Gentry, Travis Dunn and Dennis Dunn, who won on a match of cards after shooting a 57. Placing second, also with a score of 57, was the team of Clay Davis, Linda Therrien, Russ Rudd and Tom Morway.

In Flight 2, the winning team with a score of 60 was the foursome of Barry Bittner, Mike Traegde, Andrew Deierlein and Ken Danielson. Placing second with a score of 63 was the team of Ray Ekstrom, Linda Ekstrom, Dee Paul, Makie Chapman.

The winning team in Flight 3 was the foursome of Pat Bray, Snuffie Turner, PJ Nelson and Buddy Martin with a score of 62, while the team of Carman Davis, Johnnie Perry, Dennis Keppel and James Goins placed second with a 66.

Pat Bray took home the top honors with the longest drive of a marshmellow, while Linda Ekstrom and Barry Bittner grabbed the two closest-to-the-pin awards.

The money raised will benefit local Rotary charities in Highlands County.
