Streaks give solid showing

The Sebring Blue Streaks swimming and diving teams ran up against some tough customers during Saturday's Class 2A-Region 3 meet at North Shore Pool in Dunedin but were able to secure a fair number of scoring efforts, as the girls team placed 11th in the team standings and the boys finished 15th.Published: November 5, 2012
Sebring will be advancing Byron Cobb to the Class 2A state meet in the 1-meter diving competition after he placed sixth with 336.55 points. Cobb is seeded No. 20 for state, but his 420.90-point effort in the district meet would have him in the top eight, so anything can happen.
Fellow Blue Streak Robert Jennings placed 12th with 242.40 points in the event, which was held the day before the swimming competition.
On the girls side, Sara Bohan placed fifth with 305.25 points, exceeding the required 280 points needed to advance, but missed out on a berth to state, as the cutoff mark was 321.60. Erika Cord was seventh with 278.55 points.
In the swimming competition, the Sebring girls 200-yard medley relay team of Gabby Dion, Emily Helterhoff, Julia Anderson and Rachel Smith placed 10th with a time of 2:09.61.
The Blue Streaks' Tony Karl placed 11th in the boys 200 IM, finishing with a time of 2:17.94.
The Sebring girls 200 freestyle relay team of Smit, Dion, Anderson and Helterhoff advanced to the finals where they placed eighth with a time of 1:54.12.
The Blue Streaks boys 200 freestyle relay team of Jomar Carrasquillo, Karl, Davis Stephens and Ty Johnson placed 13th with a time of 1:39.18.
Helterhoff placed 15th in the girls 100 breaststroke, notching a time of 1:21.14.
Sebring's boys 400 freestyle relay team of Tevin Bullard, Josh Copeland, Talon Bullard and Carrasquillo placed 12th with a time of 4:03.79.
Tampa's Holy Names ran away with the girls team title with 442 points, while Tampa's Jesuit swam to the boys team title.
The Class 2A state meet will be held Thursday at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. The boys diving competition will begin at 1:30 p.m.
