Jarrett Ford first-half champs

SEBRING - Bill Jarrett Ford split a doubleheader Thursday at the Highlands County Sports Complex to win the first half championship in the senior softball 50s league, finishing at 7-3. Published: February 13, 2013
In the first game, Fairmount Services, who finished in second place with a record of 5-5, topped Jarrett by the score of 15-8. Leading Fairmount was manager Brad Caid, going 4-for-4. Tom McNally was 3-for-4 with a long double, Jim Morgan was 3-for-4 and Dick Cook went 3-for-5.
Winning pitcher Bob "Swamp" Poulin continued his season-long extra-base hitting barrage with a double and triple.
Top hitters for Jarrett were Ray Trudell, Larry Kelly, Bill Searse and John Pianowski.
In the second game, Jarrett beat Reflections 14-2, as Reflections finished the first half of the season in the cellar at 3-7. For Jarrett, Dave Reed, Ray Trudeau and Dale Thornton led the way with four hits each.
On Tuesday, Fairmount Services nipped Reflections 13-12. Caid had a monster day, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a key, fifth-inning, three-run homer. He finished the game with six RBI.
Gary Quartara also went 3-for-3 with a double and triple. McNally added two doubles and 78-year-old Gallo "Gonzo" Gonzalez burned the left fielder with a 250-foot shot over his head for a double.
Reflections shortstop John Smutnick, went 4-for- 4, launching two long home runs.
Highlands County 60 Senior League
Monday's results had the Independent White Sox over the Fairmount Services Angels by a score of 14-11.
The White Sox' hitting star was Tom McNally with two doubles, including the game-winner. Chuck Fluharty had four hits, Gary Steeves, Bob Roth and Moe Pier added three hits apiece. Winning pitcher was Dick Ostretch.
The losing Angels were led by Gallo Gonzalez's three hits, while Curt Brown, Jim Morgan and Wayne McNett smacked three hits.
The other game had the VFW 4300 Cubs edging the Alan-Jay Red Sox by a score of 16-14.
The Cubs were paced by Don Dobbert and Boom-Boom Buja. Winning pitcher John Kloet had three hits, while Gene Phillips, Jesse Hathaway and Gary Tankersley all had two hits.
Alan-Jay's Bill Kelsey, Jim Guild and J.R. Reed each had three hits.
The first half ends with VFW 4300 winning the division. Wednesday saw them continue their winning ways with a 23-10 decision over Independent. Hot-hitting Dobbert had four hits, , and Bill Scrase had four hits.
Brian Balcombe and Roger Gasperlin smacked three hits.
The losers were led by John Jefferies and Craig Sutliff's three hits each, while George Lavoie and Roth each had a triple and single.
On the other diamond, Alan-Jay lit up the scoreboard with a 25-9 win over Fairmount Services.
The hot-hitting Red Sox were led by Frank Lantz's five hits. Guild had four hits, while Dennis Mitchell, Dick Schultz and Reed reached base twice.
Fairmount Services broke out of a terrible slump, getting nine runs in three innings. Don Cunningham had four hits, while McNett and John Miller added three hits each.
