Nearly 100 golfers turn out for second annual tournament

AVON PARK - The second annual George Davis Memorial golf tournament took place at River Greens in Avon Park on Saturday, as 96 players enjoyed cooler temperatures and posted some solid scores. The tournament was a fundraiser for the River Greens Highlands County Youth Golf Scholarship Fund.Published: November 20, 2012
The field was broken into four flights and the winning team in the Championship Flight was the foursome of Jowl Walkup, Jason Walkup, Colin Walkup and Zachary Walkup. The foursome combined to shoot a 54 in the four-person scramble.
There was a tie for second place, but the team of Austin Smith, Ron Smith, Bob Wolf and Doug Davis claimed second on the basis of matching cards after shooting a 58. Taking third place, also with a 58, was the foursome of Trey Marley, Jeremy Camino, Amir Becker and Alex Robels.
The winning team in the First Flight was the foursome of Frank Hocott, Frank Hocott II, Larry Staggs and Jack Linsmeyer. The quartet combined to record a score of 58.
In second place was the foursome of Jim Cercy, Vince Boever, Gil Heier and Cecil Lemons with a score of 60. The team of Clay Davis, Rodney Davis, Joe Craigo and Linda Therrien placed third with a round of 61.
The Second Flight saw a tie at the top of the leader board, but capturing first place on the basis of matching cards was the team of Dan Pelfrey, Mary Pelfrey, Jody Pelfrey and Max Pelfrey.
Taking second place, also with a score of 61, was the foursome of Ken Koon, Michele Koon, Tom Stewart and April Stewart. In third place, with a score of 63, was the foursome of Butch Smith, J.R. Messier, Al Farrell and Lisa Davis.
In the Third Flight, the winning team consisted of Kenneth Brunswick, Carolyn Brunswick, Dick McClay and Carol McKay. The team combined to shoot a 67.
Taking second place was the foursome of Joe Graf, Pat Graf, B.C. Roberts and Lucy Roberts with a score of 69.
In third place, with a score of 71, was the foursome of Don Miller, Patsy Miller, Frances Neil and John Hierholzer. The team notched a score of 71.
Butch Smith had closest-to-the-pin for men on No. 3, as he knocked his tee shot 6 feet, 5 inches from the hole, while Tom Aul captured the KP honors on No. 12, with a shot 9 feet, 2 inches from the hole.
Carol McClay grabbed closest-to-the-pin honors for women on No. 5, knocking her tee shot 10 feet from the pin, while Avon Park girls golf coach Suzie Gentry grabbed the honors on No. 17, with a shot 9 feet, 7 inches from the hole.
