The annual Children's Christmas Golf Classic is one of the most popular events on the golfing calendar for Highlands County golfers. The tournament has been a mainstay in the area for 21 years and this was the first year the event was held under its new name, the Brad and Aaron Doty Memorial Children's Christmas Classic.

This year's tournament attracted a solid turnout of 124 players, which was up more than 50 players from last year. Players competed in a four-person scramble format over the demanding Turtle Run course at Sun 'n Lake Golf Club on Saturday.

The event benefits The Champion For Children Foundation that helps local children who need the help of others during the Christmas season and throughout the year.

Running away with the First Flight with a score of 54 was the foursome of Mark Hopkins, Bill Davis, Cody Brownwell and Mike Lingenfelder. Hopkins and Davis were on the winning team last year.

The foursome of Patt Dell, Lars Bylund, Jim Gullick and P.T. Salinder placed second with a score of 57, with the foursome of Jared Brooker, Billy Alexy, Heath Prescott and Hunter Prescott taking third with a score of 58.

The Second Flight was won with a score of 57 by the team of Larry Bush, Wade Carter, Sherrill Brown and Aaron Brown. Eric Zwayer, Mike Halloran, Ed Vowels and Terry Hancock placed second with a score of 61 and the team of Larry Kelly, Johnny Elder, Buddy Yarbrough and Mike Andres placed third on the basis of matching cards with a score of 62.

The Third Flight was won by the team of Vernon Sommers, Daniel Sommers, Josh Muccio and Brandon Clem with a score of 62.

Taking second place on the basis of matching cards was the team of Bob Mitchell, George Kehrt, Jimmie Knack and Jerry Cumpston with a score of 63. Placing third, also with a score of 63, was the team of Kip Doty, Jim Baker, Scott Hill and G.L. Baker.
