SEBRING - A candlelight vigil was held Saturday evening at the Highlands County Courthouse in honor of the shooting victims at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

Twenty green and yellow candles, in memory of each of the children killed, each candle adorned with an American flag, were set up along with six figurines to commemorate the teachers who lost their lives.

Patricia Austin, who along with Yudith Fernandez organized the event, said: "It touches us as a nation … we need to stand by each other."

Austin, who prepared a statement for the vigil, became overcome by emotion many times and had to have help reading her speech.

She said the figurines will be sent to Connecticut along with local newspapers. Austin also noted the figurines will be displayed with others from around the country.

"The community was more than happy to help," Austin said. "All of the candles, flags and figurines were donations by local businesses."

Walmart donated the flags and the candles, and Dollar General donated the figurines. Austin said she was happy people took time out of their day to come and remember the victims.

Lt. John Barcinas of the Highlands County Sherriff's Department spoke, saying the sheriff's office is available to answer any questions regarding the safety of children when at school.

Marisol Fernandez continued the vigil, singing "Amazing Grace," and Edwin Padilla ended the evening by leading a prayer.

Locals in Newtown have organized a fundraiser to help the families of the victims. Newtown is working directly with the United Way to distribute funds.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can call (800) 461-0672 or send a check to: The Sandy Hook School Support System Fund, c/o Newtown Savings Bank, 39 Main St., Newtown, CT 06470.
