Tourney tests free-throw skills

SEBRING - Two athletes walked away with top honors at the Special STARS Basketball competition Sept. 22 at the First Baptist Church of Sebring's Recreation Outreach Center.Published: October 6, 2012
Shawn Squires won a trophy for shooting the most free throws in the advanced level, while Katie Gibson won the trophy for the best free-throw shooter in the beginner's level. This was a new contest offered this year. They each got a chance to shoot 10 free throws and both sunk seven out of 10 baskets. Squires and Gibson also were first-place winners in their divisions.
Approximately 35 athletes competed in skill drills. There were two levels — beginners and advanced players. Each level had different divisions according to the athlete's abilities.
They all competed in skills such as passing the ball at a target, shooting free throws, target shooting, and dribbling through a course. They scored points for each skill to receive awards.
Squires played in the advanced high division. Other winners in the bracket were Bill Sobczak, second; Eddie Thomas, third; Greg Robinson, fourth; Gerald Bass, fifth; John Davis, sixth; Larry Rivers, seventh; and Bill Wheeler, eighth.
In the advanced middle division, the winners were Emily Lavely, first; John Smith, second, Annie Horn, third; Ilana Levy, fourth; Joe Singha, fifth; Lewis Simpson, sixth; and Ronnie Gladson, seventh.
Gibson played in the beginners high division. Other winners in this group were Jacqueline Furry, second; Penny Holder, third; Ricky Marino, fourth; Dustin Akey, fifth; Mac Smith, sixth; and Bruce Brummett, seventh.
In the beginners middle division, the winners were Edrei Lopez, first; Amy Matthews, second; Maria Rivera, third; Fred Moore, fourth; Alan Kufnowski, fifth; Sarah Moore, sixth; Sue Talios, seventh; Minnie Sue Reid, eighth; and Maricel Moreno, ninth.
Bryan Bishop won first place in the beginners low division.
Each athlete received a trophy that was partially donated by Cindy's Gifts & Engraving in Sebring.
Special STARS provides 12 different sports to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities throughout Highlands County.
The next competition will be track and field and cycling on Nov. 11.
