At least eight 2010 Highlands County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicles may need upgrades for locking mechanisms, said Nell Hays, sheriff's office public information officer.

The decision was made to check the vehicles after a burglary suspect arrested last week forced open a patrol car's rear door twice and escaped the second time, the report said.

The burglary suspect, Steven John Reimann, 25, 4714 Granada Ave., Sebring, was recaptured 50 feet from the vehicle and charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling, third-degree grand theft and escape.

Hays said the locking mechanisms will be examined on seven other vehicles from the same year to see if improvements need to be made.
