SEBRING - Gubernatorial candidate and outgoing state Sen. Nan Rich will speak Saturday at the Democratic Women's Club of Highlands County after the club's general meeting. Refreshments will be served at 9:45 a.m.Published: November 13, 2012
Rich was re-elected to the state Senate in November 2006 and served as the Senate Democratic leader since 2010. She served in the state House of Representatives from 2000 to 2004. Rich is widely recognized as one of Florida's leading champions of children's and social justice issues, said a news release.
Prior to her election, she served as the national president of the National Council of Jewish Women for the 1996-1999 triennium.
"She has extensive experience in advocacy and community service and has worked to improve the lives of women, children and families in the U.S. and Israel," the news release added. In 1999, President Bill Clinton appointed Rich to serve as a board member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
She currently serves on the board of directors of KIDS in Distress, the Children's Services Board of Broward County and the American Jewish Congress, Southeast Region.
In 2003, Rich was inducted into the Broward County Women's Hall of Fame and the Miami Beach High School Hall of Fame. She also received the 2003-2004 Humane Legislator Award from the Humane Society of the United States.
In 2002 she was the recipient of the first Broward County Legal Aid "For the Public Good" Award.
