LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man was free on $6,500 bail Tuesday, after he was charged in connection with an alleged shooting incident reported in the vicinity of Robinson Street in Lake Placid.

Wallace Latrell Legree III, 18, of 109 Robinson St., was booked into the Highlands County Jail on Sunday, on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (firearm) without intent to kill, use of a firearm during a felony and discharge of a firearm in public.

According to a Highlands County Sheriff's Office arrest report, deputies were called to investigate a 19-year-old man's claim that Legree III had taken several shots at him behind the Redland Christian Migrant Association building at 101 Robinson St.

The victim told investigators he had gotten into an argument with Legree over accusations about stolen property, which later got physical.

A witness told investigators he or she saw some of the argument and separated the two, the report stated.

The victim said Legree walked into his front door and told investigators he thought the argument was over. While walking behind the RCMA building, a route he always took, the victim said he saw Legree at the end of the path, and Legree swore at him and fired the first round. The victim ran and heard another shot hit an air conditioning unit. He got home and called 911, the report stated.

Legree told investigators the opposite had happened, and that it was the reported victim who did the shooting at him, and he ran to his grandmother's house.

"No shell casings or projectiles were recovered to substantiate Legree's claim," the report stated.
