Robo calls not coming from elections office

SEBRING - Frequent automated phone calls generated by political parties are annoying some who believe the Supervisor of Elections Office is responsible.

"We are getting inundated with calls and we are getting complaints about all the phone calling by the political parties and the robo calls and the stuff like that," said Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Joe Campbell.

It's not the Supervisor of Elections Office that is making these calls, he stressed.

People get an automated call, and after it goes through, its message says if you want to vote by mail, press one, Campbell said. When listeners press "one," they are automatically transferred to the Supervisor of Elections Office.

They ask, "Why did you call me for?" and the elections staff tries to tell them that the elections office did not make the call, he said. They complain they are being called over and over and over.

"When it hits a presidential year, you've got all the fury going," he noted. "Everybody on both sides of the fence is pumped up and trying to do what they think is right and people get aggravated because they get contacted so many times."
