Ready for some fair time

SEBRING - It's time for funnel cakes, livestock showings and showdowns, fair rides and a bevy of performances – from a hypnotist to a highly trained grizzly bear.Published: February 7, 2013
Welcome to the Highlands County Fair, which returns Friday at the fairgrounds, 781 Magnolia Ave., Sebring, from Friday until Saturday, Feb. 16.
General admission prices have gone up to $8 a person but children 10 and younger can enter free.
There are some discount days residents can take advantage of: Sunday, Feb. 10 is Senior Citizen Day. Seniors are admitted for $4 a person with an ID; On Wednesday, Feb 13, military personnel and veterans can enter for $4 a person with a military ID; while on Thursday, Feb. 14, students will be able to enter free if they bring in a can of food from 5-7p.m.
Reithoffer Shows will run the midway and an armband costs $22. The midway will be open from 5 p.m. to midnight on Feb. 8, Feb. 12, Feb. 15, and will close an hour earlier on Feb. 11, Feb. 13, and Feb. 14. Midway hours on Feb. 9 and Feb. 16 are from 1 p.m. to midnight; and from 1 to 9 p.m. Feb. 10.
Local students will be showing the livestock they have raised, which will be judged and auctioned off. A fair official said students have entered about 100 hogs, 45 steers and heifers, 30 poultry and 80 rabbit entries. She described the number of entries as about the same as last year.
It's also the time for a host of youth beauty pageants. On Friday, judges will choose the Jr. Miss Highlands County 2013 at a contest that starts at 7p.m. at the Highlands Today Center. Saturday is the day for the Miss Highlands County 2013 pageant at 7 p.m. at the center while the Little Miss Highlands County 2013 pageant follows at 7 p.m. Monday.
Some of the old favorite events return again this year. Mark Yuzuik will be performing his master hypnotist show several times during the fair. Those who want to see a real grizzly bear drink out of a bottle and grin from ear to ear should not miss The Grizzly Experience.
The fair will also have several vendors selling food. Budweiser is also sponsoring again a beer garden and several bands will entertain the audience. Bring their music to the fair this year are Lotela Gold, California Toe Jam Band, The Florida Bluegrass Express, and The Shannon Reed Band.
