AVON PARK - The city lost its public safety director Thursday effective at the end of the month, following a resignation letter from John P. King to the city manager.Published: July 20, 2012
King cited the city considering outsourcing its law enforcement duties to the Highlands County Sheriff's Office even after he made significant improvements to the department as his reason.
King was a lieutenant in the police department when he was named as director in November of 2011.
"I am torn at having to make a decision regarding my continued employment with the city," King wrote. "While you and I have enjoyed a good and open working relationship, this specific issue has caused fundamental differences between us."
King's letter was followed by an acceptance letter from City Manager Julian Deleon, terminating King's employment effective July 31.
King requested that the city provide the severance provided in his employment contract.
Deleon responded saying in accordance with his contract the city would provide the severance and benefits for a specified time period.
"Prior to all of this, I had evaluated you employment performance as a city department head; and clearly from that evaluation, my formalized opinion of your work product was high," Deleon wrote. "I appreciate your cooperation and professionalism during a difficult time for you, the employees, myself and the city council."
