SEBRING An Avon Park man did some extensive shopping at a department store, but the problem was that he never paid for the merchandise, authorities said.

Joshua Warren Smith, 30, of 2437 Highlands Blvd., Avon Park, was arrested Jan. 28 by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with third-degree grand theft.

Authorities accuse Smith of entering the Bealls department store and selecting two sets of earrings, 12 sterling silver necklaces, a shirt, socks and shorts, an arrest report said.

Smith is alleged to have removed the tags and when security approached trying to conceal items in his pocket, the arrest report said.

His bond was set at $5,000.
