Historic battle to be re-enacted

OKEECHOBEE - A re-enactment of the Battle of Okeechobee of the Second Seminole War will take place at the Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Battle of Okeechobee was fought on Christmas Day 1837 and was the fiercest battle of the Second Seminole War. The cast, some of whom are descendents, will portray Indian warriors such as Abiaca, Coacoochee, Halleck-Tustenuggee and Alligator.

It will depict how the Seminoles, greatly outnumbered, battled a massive militia and U.S. Army troops led by Col. Zachary Taylor and Col. Richard Gentry of the Missouri Volunteers. The battle will be narrated by author and historian John Missall.

Entertainment will include powwow dancing, vendors and exhibits, a raffle, Seminole Indian food, living history, cannon demonstrations, Irish folk music, alligator demonstrations, children's horse rides and more.
