SEBRING By a 3-2 vote, the Highlands County commissioners voted Tuesday to terminate County Administrator Rick Helms' position.Published: July 3, 2012
Commissioners Greg Harris and Don Elwell dissented.
Elwell came down to the podium to plead passionately for Helms, and to chide the majority for their "witch hunt."
Harris joined Elwell in asking the three to "do the right thing."
However, Barbara Stewart said she had heard nothing from Helms or the citizens who spoke on his behalf to change her mind, and moved for termination.
Commissioner Ron Handley seconded, and Chairman Jack Richie cast the deciding vote. Neither Handley nor Richie spoke.
