SEBRING - After the story "Horses overrun shelter" appeared in Saturday's Highlands Today, four horses were adopted.Published: July 12, 2012
"And one local businessman has stepped forward and donated $2,000 to help take care of the upkeep of the horses," said Highlands County Animal Control Director Darryl Scott. "Some others are leaving us as soon as their Coggins test comes back."
Last week, the shelter had 10 horses in its corral. It was costing county taxpayers about $8 a day to feed them and more periodically for a veterinarian to examine the horses and for a farrier to trim their hooves. Each horse must be given a Coggins test to determine if they have Equine Infectious Anemia, transmitted by blood-sucking insects.
One more horse is eligible for adoption, Scott said. Four others are being held pending a sheriff's investigation into neglect.
