SEBRING - David Solomon will likely return next month as the School Board of Highlands County's transportation director, a position that has been vacant since his departure over a year ago.Published: December 10, 2012
Solomon has been serving as the transportation director for the Lake County School District, which has about twice the enrollment of the Highlands County School District.
The school board decided in September to advertise to fill the transportation director position.
At that time, Superintendent Wally Cox said the department needed leadership, because of the size of its staff and the complexity of bus routing.
The school board is slated to vote on Cox's personnel recommendations, including Solomon, at its Dec. 11 meeting. If approved, Solomon's start date would be Jan. 2.
He previously served as the transportation director from July 2007 through August 2011.
Human Resources Director Vivianne Waldron said the advertisement for the position was extended because the district had no qualified applicants.
"We did the interview and the interview committee selected David Solomon as the highest candidate and made the recommendation to the board," Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Mike Averyt said. "We are happy to have him back ."
Averyt said four candidates were interviewed for the position.
Carlene Varnes has been heading the transportation department, first as interim director and then as operations manager.
