AVON PARK - Anybody who shows up at the City of Avon Park's third annual holiday feast today gets a warm, holiday-style meal.

But the third annual sit-down event, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Avon Park Community Center, is more than just a benefit for less fortunate residents.

It's also a time for the community to interact with city workers, who along with their families will be serving the meals, and another place where Santa and Mrs. Claus will be making an early stop.

Public Safety Director Jason Lister, who is spearheading the effort that is put together entirely by local businesses and Avon Park city staff, said they are expecting to feed 320 people.

Toys also will be given out to kids who attend, he said. The community center is located at 310 W. Main St., and while the feast is geared for Avon Park residents, nobody will be turned away.

Businesses that are helping are Bill Jarrett Ford, Wells Motor Co. and Wild Turkey Tavern. Hotel Jacaranda culinary arts students will help with the cooking, which starts at 4 a.m. today.

The event was originally started by former Sgt. David Sass as an "outreach event for families in need during the holidays," Lister said.
