AVON PARK - The Ridge Area Arc's fourth annual Wiener Dog Race will be held Oct. 13 on Museum Avenue as part of downtown Avon Park's Oktoberfest celebration.

Prior to the race, the Wiener Walk will start at 2 p.m., where dachshunds and their owners wearing costumes (or not) will parade before the spectators.

There is a $2 entry fee for the walk with awards given in three categories: best dressed wiener dog, best dressed team (wiener dog/person) and best float (wiener dog in a pulled device).

The wiener dog races, with a $10 entry fee, start at 3 p.m. with awards presented in four categories: puppy, senior/disabled, adult and top dog.

A wiener wannabe race, for dogs under 20 pounds, will follow the other races.

Dogs must have shots up to date and must remain on a leash when not racing.

All proceeds will benefit Ridge Area Arc, which provides programs and service for individuals with disabilities.

Event organizer, Ridge Area Arc's Tonja Weed, said they had about 35 to 40 dogs at last year's event.

"We have the people who come in dressed in [Halloween] costume with their dogs and with some of them just the dogs are dressed up," she said. "It is fun. We had a dog dressed as a hotdog and one lady was ketchup and the other was mustard."

Make check payable to Ridge Area Arc and mail to 120 West College Drive, Avon Park, Fl, 33825.
