AVON PARK - A 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday by Avon Park Police and charged with a third-degree felony offense after police say he removed his electronic ankle bracelet used to monitor his whereabouts.

The official charge was public order crimes destroy — damage — alter electronic monitoring equipment.

Police discovered Tuesday that the youth cut the strap holding the electronic monitor and put it under his pillow so he could sneak out.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office Central Records stated it could not release information as to why the youth was wearing the device.

It appeared from records that were supplied that he was previously at the jail in March and April of 2011.

Police Detective Christopher Bates reportedly located the youth while he was walking behind the Citgo Stop and Shop, at 200 W. Main St., in Avon Park, where he was promptly arrested and transported to the jail without incident.
