SEBRING A 74-year-old Sebring man was arrested earlier this week after he was accused of cutting the top of his son's head with a knife during an argument, according to an arrest report.

Laurence W. McManus, 74, 310 Woodbine, Sebring, was arrested Jan. 19 by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The man's son told authorities that he confronted his father after his father started "speaking ill" of his mother, the report said.

He told deputies that his father went into kitchen and retrieved a large knife, the report said.

When the father returned and started swinging the knife at the son, the son tried to protect himself with a broom, he told deputies.

But the father managed to cut him across the top of his head, the son told authorities, according to the report.

Although the son didn't want his father to be arrested, the father was compliant, telling deputies, "I'm ready to go to jail, come on, take me," the report said.

McManus was released from jail on $5,000 bond on Jan. 21.
