Improvements to Max Long playing fields are overdue

It's great to see work under way at Sebring's Max Long Recreational Complex to make improvements to the baseball fields.

It's been a long time coming but it was a huge need for a place that serves so many people.

We can't wait to see it all completed.

Efforts to improve Max Long fields began years ago. The concrete bunker dugouts were stifling hot and allowed little air flow.

They also provided cover for people doing some bad things when baseball wasn't being played there.

The old bleachers, apparently made by the same craftsmen who constructed Stonehenge, were made of solid concrete. They were far from comfortable while watching games.

Besides the obvious fixes, other improvements are coming as well.

Some shade will be added, as will improvements to fencing.

The sagging chain-link fence on some fields has needed replacing for years, especially the backstops.

And any protection from fly balls would be a huge benefit.

A lot of youth fields around Florida have protective netting to prevent spectators from being hit by foul balls. At most complexes, where all four fields surround a central concession stand, balls fly from every direction from time to time. Several years ago in Sebring a baby took a foul ball in the face. She was OK but it scared a lot of people and ended with a trip to the hospital.

The netting is planned for later.

Youth baseball serves so many people in Highlands County. Families convene there almost every night during the season, and with state tournaments and AAU ball being played there, they are well used.

This is money well-spent on our community and our children, despite what some curmudgeons say about spending money on such things.

There are many good causes in our community, and this is one of the best.
