It's easy to become jaded these days while we are awash in news of tragedies, dirty politics and even the latest celebrity scandals. And then, sometimes, a ray of sunshine emerges that reminds us that not all is wrong. The recent "Day of Giving" by three local dentists provided that sunshine on Friday.Published: September 23, 2012
The dentists, Drs. David Willey, Steven Guelff and Gayle Obermayr, along with their staffs, spent a long day Friday in Sebring providing free dental treatment to anyone who showed up and was willing to wait in line.
Everything from wisdom tooth extractions to abscesses to more basic care was provided that day.
The long lines of people desperately seeking this care demonstrated there was a big need right here in our communities. These dental practices stepped up to help.
Their Day of Giving, as they called it, showed a level of compassion we rarely see, at least not on this scale. Some medical and dental professionals do provide no-cost services from time to time, but not like this.
The selfless services these dentists and their staffs provided reminded us that greed doesn't rule everyone, and that an occasional offering to people less fortunate does more than some people can imagine.
Almost all of us have experienced excruciating pain because of dental issues. Some of us have experienced the inability to afford proper care as well. Knowing that people are living with this level of pain and discomfort and are unable to do anything about it is troubling.
We hope professionals of all kinds consider offering the communities they serve similar services from time to time. It doesn't have to be doctors or dentists or attorneys. Many people can provide their expertise to people who otherwise can't afford or access it.
What a great example these dental staffs set for the entire community. Kudos on a job well done.
